BRUNEI

 ana03     tháng 2 13, 2017     No comments

Small but interesting country on island Borneo. I arrived with a speed boat from Malaysian island Labuan and was nicely surprised with polite and welcoming officers at the border, sympathic bus driver, even honest taxi driver. The capital Bandar Seri Begawan is surprisengly clean, devoloped city with its own charm. I was glad that I reserved a room in the newest hotel in town Badi'ah.

Affordable prices, big rooms, extremely nice decorated. The bathroom is very functional, with lots of hot water which I always appreciate. All the amenities are of good quality. Buffet breakfast is just great - lots of choice, mostly local specialities, but also eggs, cereals. The restaurant has got nice views through panoramic windows. There is also inviting outdoor pool. Flat TV and Wi-fi work prerfectly, and guests could use a computer in the lobby which is a rarity on Borneo. The hotel is located a bit out of the town center but it is easy to walk some 2o minutes or take a taxi for around 5 US.

The most interesting building in the center of town is Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque. It can be visited at certain hours, but the most impressive is exterior. Especialy during the night.

A must visit is the water village - here you can feel and see how locals were living for centuries in a houses built on a stilts at the river banks. There are modern parts as well with nice houses. Even shops, schools, police station... The easiest way to get there is by water taxi. For less than  1 US dolar you get a fast and thrilling ride on fast boat.
Public tansportation in Brunei is not very friendly - so walking is a good option to explore the capital. There are lots of recreational parks with nice trails, lakes, even waterfalls. Interesting tropical plants as well and good chances to meet monkeys if you bring some food.

Getting there: Easiest connection with Sabah is fast boat to Labuan. Crossing the land border is time consuming as you have to cross the border 3 times! There is a Brunei enclave  which passes the only road in this part of Borneo! Going to Sarawak is easier - two buses per day are connecting Bruneis capital with coastal town Miri.
